My Story

IMG_1743_edited.jpg

I started writing in high school, turning out a gossipy column on the dating scene for the school paper. In retrospect, it was a bald stab at popularity by a nerdy teacher’s pet whose three brothers ran with a much cooler crowd. But my favorite teacher thought my stories were creative.

That was all the encouragement I needed.

I studied communications and news writing in college before landing jobs as a reporter and sometimes anchor at TV stations across the country. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I wrote thousands of stories for morning, midday, and evening newscasts. I even earned a few Emmy awards along the way. As exciting as it was at times, none of it compares to the high of connecting with readers who identify with my young Queer characters and the challenges, societal, romantic, and otherwise, they confront and grow from.

The leap from TV news reporter to writer of young adult fiction didn’t happen overnight. My first novel, which I would work on after late-night live shots, took me years to complete. And then, it went nowhere. But drafting the story, taking the finished manuscript to conferences, and having it critiqued by other, much more talented writers, taught me so much. Humility, for starters. That manuscript now lies in a figurative drawer on my laptop, collecting figurative dust.

When not creating characters and giving them hurdles and high stakes to deal with, I’m spending time with my husband, Mike, and our rambunctious labradoodle, Remy, in the magical Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende.

Thank you for visiting my website. Here, you can check out my previously published short stories and see what I’m working on now. And if I have any breaking news to report, I’ll be back to post updates.
